-
- You folks (might) be interested in the slightly different letter I just
- received from Paul Rinaldo (W4RI), editor of QST. BTW, I've know Paul
- slightly for quite a few years, ever since he was the leading organizational
- light in AMRAD * .
- -------- copied material follows ---------
- Oct 5, 1989
- Dear Bob:
-
- John Lindholm passed your letter about The New Frontier along to me for
- reply. QST is committed to covering the microwaves, but with a different
- emphasis. We are keenly aware of the need to encourage microwave activity
- and to get more amateurs active on the bands above 432 MHz. We think that the
- best way to do this is through comprehensive feature articles, rather than
- through a monthly column, that by virtue of its size, can present only bits
- of information. For example, we devoted 20 QST pages in May, June and July to
- easy-to-build microwave gear. We are committed to publishing such articles in
- the future.
-
- As far as a regular presence in QST, news of microwave operations will
- continue to receive coverage in The WQorld Above 50 MHz. And, we're working
- on the presentation of the standings boxes in Bill's column to reduce the
- space they take. [RJC note: I had suggested keeping their content in a smaller
- font.]
-
- ARRL is serving the needs of the microwave community much better, in many
- more ways, than we did in the eraly 1980s when The New Forntier column began.
- For example:
- [The following entries are condensed.]
- > ARRL has published over 1000 pages of Central StatesVHF and Microwave
- Update proceedings so far.
- > Operating activities and awards.
- > 1990 ARRL Handbook has some 70 pages of UHF and microwave eqpt and ants.
- > "It's overdue, but we are progressing on a microwave book."
- > QEX carries UHF and microwave info.
- [End of condensation]
-
- ARRL is not deemphasizing microwave activity; rather we're shifting the
- way our support is delivered.
-
- Sincerely,
- Paul Rinaldo, W4RI
- Editor, QST
- ---------- end -----------
- SO, there we have a "commitment" to microwaves from the Editor of QST. I'm
- as interested as the rest of you as to how well he succeeds. From our
- acquaintance of years ago, I would say his OWN interests lie more in
- packet radio, national packet nets and spread spectrum, than in RF items.
- He was also interested in means to increase the throughput on HF
- packet links.
-
- Pardon the lengthy posting,
- Bob W3OTC

- I recently picked up an old Heath 2 meter for use on packet. No manual though.
- The darn thing quits transmitting at 145.6 or so and I can't get the lower
- standard 2 meter freqs. Soldering Iron is hot, I'll fully fund a copy of the
- complete manual set. Thanks in advance, Steve N5OWK. P.S. Send mail first.
- I'll contact nearest help (if any).

- Well, actually I would not call it a net. Maybe a chaotic dis-organization
- of interested parties, yes; net, no. (Hey, sounds a lot like usenet, doesn't
- it? :-)

- Well, if the Saturday un-net were really a net, I'd probably go along
- with this. However, its not at all a net, just a place and a time.
- Also, that would be 10am and 415pm here, and I'm busy both those times,
- so would not be able to join the Fido net anyway.
-
- Since I plan to be on 10m (almost) every Saturday anyway, I'll continue
- the 'tradition' (?) of an un-net, as long as nobody minds too much.
- (Remember, I'm not trying to take away from the FidoNet Net. Really
- I'm not! If I get massive email telling me that continuing the un-net
- is a -bad thing- then I will change the comments about it in my .sig
- (but I will *still* be on 10m most saturdays at 1500Z, since thats
- the time I've set aside for HF Hamming, so I'll probably make some
- kind of comment about saturdays no matter what.))
-
-
- And on a slightly different subtopic of the same subject:
-
- I've been talking to someone in California who has asked that we try to
- hang around for people like him who find 8am CA time to be too early
- to be up. So if a few East Coasters (:-) would not mind hanging around
- for the California folks until at least 1600Z, they would probably
- appreciate it (at least, Alan would :-). I've also heard from someone
- who would most likely not be available until 1700Z. So don't think
- that it quits at 1600Z...
-
- (In fact, I expect to be on from 1500 to at least 1800 if the band
- warrants it. However, if it turns out like last week, I'll go work
- on my antenna!)
-
- So, I'll be looking for *you* on 10 on Saturday. Remember - only 48
- states left for usenet WAS! :-)
-
-
- While I've got your attention, I'll bring up another question someone
- asked me. Should we totally ignore the ARRL and set up our
- own QSL system? It has been suggested that we could send a QSL
- via email, and if you *really* want some paper for your wall, we
- could come up with a postscript-able QSL card (send it to your
- PS printer, and viola! If PS is not good, we could go with some
- (ntg)roff format based card or such). (I'm going to have to look
- up the 'rules' the ARRL has for QSL cards so I know what I'm suggesting
- that we ignore!) Anyway, any thoughts? (Email and I'll try to summarize,
- but most likely what will happen is you will see your email quoted,
- including your address - so be aware that emailing me about the QSL
- idea will likely result in your becoming (in)famous on usenet :-) )
-
- 'nuff fer now.
-
- ---Join the usenet un-net, 28.410 and/or 28.390, 1500Z to 1600Z saturdays!

- Oh boy, did you pick the wrong source for information about hams! Just buy
- or even build a receiver and listen for a while. Listen to all bands at
- all times of the day for at least a month. Then form your own opinion.
- I sure am glad we hams have more bandwidth than this newsgroup. That would
- be like having one channel on a CB radio.
